COVER ART

I'm sorry I haven't posted anything in a few days, I've been without a computer (I spilled a Coke on my laptop). I know, not too smart. Anyway, this is the cover art from The Vengekeep Prophecies. This is the first in a series of three. I really enjoyed this book.

Below I've added a simple color sketch for this painting.

I don't always make a color sketch, but when I do I just print the sketch on card stock and color it with pastels. I don't spend much time with it, just enough to make sure what I have in my head is going to work.

I hope everybody has a great long weekend. Happy 4th.

  1. Kay, so ignorant librarian here. When you write that you "print the sketch" how had you created the sketch in the first place? Did you scan your sketch and then print it? : )

    1. Yes, it is a pencil sketch. I scan it and print it.

  2. This book looks great. I love the icons on the title border.
Thank-you for sharing this part of your process. Do you usually print your sketch for the final, or do you redraw it the old fashioned way?

    1. In the past I trace and redrew the sketches. That's is what I did on this one. Lately, I've been using my Epson printer to print the sketch on the watercolor paper that I paint on. it's been saving me a lot of time.

    2. Thank-you. I bought an Epson R1900 yesterday and cannot wait to try printing on watercolor paper!

  3. You are such an amazing artist! I have a couple questions to ask. I was wondering how you learned to draw the body? Also, how do you sketch out your body poses? All your characters have a unique body build. I've been having a lot of trouble lately drawing the body; I was hoping you could help.

    1. Thanks Gabby,
I draw my figure mostly from my imagination. When I was in school I took every figure drawing class that I could and spent hours and hours drawing the figure. It simply comes from practice. Draw as often as you can. If you can't find models draw from photographs or even other artists. Practice, practice, practice. There's no other way.

    2. Thank you sir! I appreciate your reply. I spend days drawing and I practice all the time. I will just keep on practicing. It is hard to draw what you picture in your head onto paper. Does it take you a few times to get a picture just the way you want it? I am still in high school and have many questions. Your words are very encouraging. Do you have any more tips?
