Hello, everyone. I haven't posted anything for a ridiculously long time. I've been trying to meet some difficult deadlines and have been chained to the drawing table for the last several month.
I am now seeing a little light at the end of the tunnel. Here's what I've been working on.

First a great book by a new author, Jennifer Trafton, called "The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic published by Dial.
It was a real pleasure to illustrate.

I have also illustrated new editions of Alvin Schwartz's "Scary Stories to tell in the Dark", published by Harper Collins.

Here are a few images.

  7. These look wonderful. I love the colours in the painted one and the bloody hands are extremely effective! I look forward to seeing these in print.

In other news, I'm not sure if you remember me, but I asked you some questions over the phone (about your illustrating) a few months ago for my Art GCSE exam. I'd just like to say that, with the help of the interview, the exam went quite swimmingly. It's being marked right now, but my teacher says that she thinks it's going to be top marks; so thanks again for the time you put in for me- it was extremely useful!

  10. Your illustrations are so amazing! I hope my technique becomes as wonderful as yours with time. Actually, I really should thank you. when I was about nine, I read the Lemony Snicket books mostly because I loved your drawings so much, being a budding cartoonist and all. Your style really had an influence on my own. I'm now a senior at Orange County High School of the Arts and I'm starting a book. I can't say it'll be anything close to what your works are like... but I say it's about the passion for illustration! Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for being an inspiration for me. :)

    Sincerely,
    L.M.

  13. your illustrations of the Scary Stories series completely ruined the tone and horror the original illustrations gave. thanks for ruining something amazing from my childhood.

    1. Well to be fair, A) he was simply hired to provide illustrations, he probably wasn't in a position to decide on anything and B) the original books still exist, and if you still own yours, he's not taking anything away from you.

All that being said, while I'm sure Brett is a stand up guy and great artist, the decision to make the reprint more "kid-friendly" is yet another step in the wussification of our culture. If we keep treating our kids like precious little infants, that's what they will be, even as adults.

  14. Brett, these are utterly beautiful, as always. I can't tell you how excited I was to find that you're doing illustrations for the Scary Stories series—I grew up with Stephen Gammell's illustrations, but it's nice to see your take. There's such a different but equally interesting mood to them.

I actually popped by to see if I could find any contact information for you. You've been one of my favorite contemporary illustrators since The Bad Beginning, and I would love to interview you about your career and influences. How can I contact you?

  15. Wonderful. I have to tell you that every time I see a book with your illustrations, I buy it for my children. The latest is "Fly by Night" and "Capt'n Hook". (I think Capt'n Hook will be for myself, however.)
    Best Wishes, Mikel Curry
