  2. How much of illustrating a book is your choice and how much is it that the author comes to you?

  3. I get the manuscript from the publisher and work from that. I rarely speak to the authors. I just work with what they've written.

  4. Thanks for replying! By the way, I just did a speech talking about my favorite artists (you were one of them) and I won (so I guess thanks for your help)! I really like the style of the lines you use in your art. The covers look painted, but what do you use to draw the chapter art in the Lemony Snicket books? Pencil or pen?

  5. The covers are in oil. The interiors are pencil drawings.

  6. That is a great cover! I also love the interior from Christmas Carol! It has so much emotion and movement! great work. You are always doing fun stuff and taught me a lot when you came to byu-idaho last year. Thanks again.

  8. Dear Mr. Helquist,

I have been looking for a detailed drawing of Count Olaf's eye tattoo for the past week or so, and I've looked in every single one of the Series of Unfortunate Events books, but I haven't found a drawing of it up close. I'm a fan of your work and I'm planning on getting a tattoo of an eye on my ankle. I was wondering if you could please help me out a little bit and point me in the right direction, so I can find a drawing of it. Me and my friends all remember seeing an eye somewhere but we all disagree on what Count Olaf's tattoo is supposed to look like and I don't even know if I was imagining it or not anymore. I'd appreciate your help very much.
    With all due respect,
    Yasmin Mansourian

  10. Your work is most spectacular and impressive. It's very inspiring and I hope to use you as a role-model in the future. I'm using you in my Fine Art G.C.S.E, and I couldn't have picked a better example of inspiration.

  12. I love your cover work! It's great how you get the oil to look so textured, almost like pastels!

  13. Thanks for all the Comments. I'm sorry for being slow to respond.
Yasmin asked if there was a close up drawing of the eye on Olafs ankle. I know that I've done one I just can't remember where it is. I will try to find it and let you know.
